HoMM is about stacking numbers and having very strategic, rather than tactical battles, while AoW is much more about the use of tactics, including understanding minutiae of units down to their resistances, abilities, on-hit effects, and how to utilize positioning, cover, and order of execution within turns to maximize combat efficiency.
